The Black Berkey® purification elements were tested with more than 10,000 times the concentration of pathogens per liter than is required by standard test protocol. Black Berkey® purification elements combine the age-old process of micro-porous filtration coupled with modern state-of-the-art technology and the highest quality materials to bring you the finest water purification elements available anywhere.

The micro-pores within the self-sterilizing and re-cleanable Black Berkey® filter elements are so small that pathogenic bacteria are simply not able to pass through them. The elements incorporate proprietary quot;adsorption" media which results from the molecular attraction of substances to the surface of the media. Black Berkey® purification elements also incorporate proprietary "absorbing" media that are impregnated into the micro-porous elements for the IONIC "absorption" of pollutants.

Black Berkey® purification elements incorporate an extremely long "contact period". Other filtration systems rely on water pressure to force water molecules through the filters at 60-90 PSI. These water molecules come into contact with the filter media for a mere fraction of a second. By comparison, water molecules passing through the "Tortuous Path" structure of the Black Berkey® purification elements, are drawn gently by gravity and stay in contact with the media for several minutes, allowing the media to be more efficient in capturing contaminates. For example, if you were to hurl 100 steel ball bearings at a large magnet, some would stick but most would bounce off. However, if you were to walk over and gently place the ball bearings on the magnet most, if not all, would adhere. Black Berkey® purification elements fully utilize this principle.

How to Clean Black Berkey Filters

If the flow rate of the Black Berkey filter slows significantly, it may be because the exterior layer of the filter has been clogged by sediment, silt, or turbidity in the water. This is more common with homes that use well water than those that use city water.

You can bring new life to the filter by cleaning the filter. You do this by scrubbing the exterior of the filter with a soft toothbrush or Scotchbrite pad under running water or in a bowl of water. Do not use soap or any detergent. This removes the exterior layer with the contaminants, and exposes a new layer of filter media. This process can be repeated over and over before the filter media is exhausted. When you replace the filter, be sure that the sealing washer is properly seated by turning the nut until tight.
